Julius Caesar Raises The Ransom…. On Himself?
In 75 B.C., a 25 year old Julius Caesar (not yet dictator for another 27 years) decided to further his studies after having a career as a criminal lawyer, which was not the epic seven year (minimum) journey it is today that requires passing the bar and working for dirt cheap as a public attorney until a big firm brings you on board. Regardless, it was still pretty much a prerequisite for getting into politics, which at the time, Julius Caesar wanted nothing to do with. In order to pursue his studies, he traveled to the island of Rhodes which was part of an eastern Roman province.
During this trip, Julius Caesar was captured by Cilician pirates who ran rampant through the Mediterranean sea at the time. …

Comedy and drama are two elements notoriously hard to successfully blend. Why Stop Now is a classic example of a film that fails to find a cohesive tone, jarringly bouncing between comedy and drama as it rushes towards a disappointingly insincere “happy” ending.
Jesse Eisenberg plays Eli, a piano prodigy with a drinking problem who has several hurdles to overcome before the most important audition of his life. First Eli needs to get his drug addicted mother Penny (Melissa Leo) to rehab. When the rehab facility won’t accept Penny because, ironically, she doesn’t have drugs in her system, the two set out to get her high. Here they cross drug dealer Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan) and Eli’s day gets more and more complicated.
Why Stop Now begins promisingly enough in an engagingly naturalistic mode, but the picture quickly skids into confusion…

Jim DeMint’s aggressive politicization of the Heritage Foundation isn’t sitting too well with a former Republican congressman who helped start the conservative think tank.
The New York Times ran a big piece on Monday that covered the transformation of Heritage under DeMint, who’s swapped the organization’s wonkish, policy-centric approach for an ideological focus that draws heavily from the tea party movement.
According to the Times, some of Heritage’s top scholars have left in recent months and research that runs counter to the group’s goals has been quashed.
None of that sits too well with Mickey Edwards, a former GOP congressman and a founding trustee of the Heritage Foundation.
“DeMint has not only politicized Heritage, he’s also trivialized it,” Edwards said.
Edwards has lamented the direction of the organization previously, telling The New Republic last year that no “thoughtful person…
